About the Avro Lancaster B.III:

The Avro Lancaster was Britain's most successful heavy bomber of World War II and one of the most famous aircraft in aviation history. Designed by Roy Chadwick and manufactured by A.V. Roe and Company (Avro), the Lancaster first entered service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and quickly proved itself superior to its predecessors. The B.III variant was powered by American-built Packard Merlin engines (license-built Rolls-Royce Merlins) and became one of the most numerous versions produced.

The Backbone of Bomber Command:

The Lancaster could carry the heaviest bomb loads of any Allied bomber, including the massive 22,000-pound Grand Slam bomb. With a crew of seven, it could fly missions deep into enemy territory at night, delivering devastating payloads to German industrial targets, military installations, and strategic sites. Over 7,300 Lancasters were built during the war, and they flew more than 156,000 sorties, dropping over 608,000 tons of bombs. The Lancaster's combination of range, payload capacity, reliability, and survivability made it the most effective heavy bomber in the European theater.

A Legacy of Courage:

Lancaster crews faced extraordinary dangers on every mission, flying through intense flak, searchlights, and enemy night fighters. Despite a loss rate of approximately 3.5% per mission, these brave airmen continued their vital work night after night. The Lancaster participated in some of the war's most famous operations, including the Dambusters raid, and continued to serve in various roles well into the 1950s. Today, only two Lancasters remain airworthy, making this detailed COBI model a wonderful way to preserve and honor this legendary aircraft's memory.
