COBI Consolidated B-24D Liberator Bomber : Set #5739
The Consolidated B-24D Liberator was a pivotal variant of the B-24 Liberator heavy bomber, marking the first mass-produced model of this iconic World War II aircraft. Designed by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation (later Consolidated Vultee, or Convair) in response to U.S. Army Air Forces requirements for a long-range bomber superior to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24D emphasized speed, range, and payload capacity. It entered U.S. service in early 1942 and was designated Liberator III in British service under Lend-Lease. Over 2,600 units were produced, contributing to the B-24's total of more than 18,000 aircraft built during the war—the most-produced U.S. aircraft of WWII.
