The Grumman F4F Wildcat was a pivotal American carrier-based fighter aircraft during World War II, produced by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation (now part of Northrop Grumman following mergers in the 1990s). Note that the F4F designation predates any direct Northrop involvement, as Grumman was an independent company during its development and production in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It served as the U.S. Navy's primary fighter from 1940 until mid-1942, when it was gradually supplanted by the more advanced Grumman F6F Hellcat.
